Grand Rapids Art Museum | Art Prize 2010 | VOTE FOR TIM

Tim is on the road shooting new work and setting up his indoor installation of INTERVENTION, projected at the Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM) in Michigan as part of the unique Artprize.  Designed as a very different art competition, the goal is for the general public and artists to collide, exchange ideas and come away changed. Part arts festival, part social experiment--this international contest is decided solely by public vote. The Artprize's mission is to;
Be a catalyst for collisions and connections between artists and communities, for the sake of infusing vitality and courage into culture.
For anyone that is in the area Tim will also be hosting an Artist's talk on Thursday 23rd September on level II @ 11am.

Get online, and vote for Tim here. Here is a taster shot from the road of the Museum, expect more...

Elders, ELSEWHERE | Idyll and friction in landscape

From June 18th to September 5th the unique ELSEWHERE art route can be seen in all of the village centers of the municipality of Sint-Mintchielsgestel. Large billboards with surprising photographic views on the landscape will be up in 23 locations along the entrance roads as well as in Sint-Mintchielsgestel. Nineteen photographers, well known both nationally & internationally, will display landscapes - often from beyond our borders, from elsewhere - in which idyll and friction form the central theme. The photos show landscapes which represent our dream of the untouched, pure landscape, comment on this or demonstrate it to be resolutely disturbed by human intervention.

Elsewhere invites the passer-by to view this interplay between local countryside and the photographic landscape elsewhere through fresh eyes.

Tim's work features as one of these billboards, for more information on the project please visit Elsewhere.

Fermynwoods, INTERVENTION, projected & Artists talk

Following on from its 2009 outing at Suffolk’s Latitude Festival & The London Art Fair, London in January 2010, UK based photographic artist Tim Simmons brings his large-scale projection to Fermynwoods at the unique setting of the Danish Shelters within Fermyn Woods.

Shown adjacent to the Danish Shelters the evening projection examines the multilayered relationship we have with our surroundings, & how subtle changes to our expectation of a place alter our perception of it.

For details on how to get there or to book a place on the Artists talk visit the Fermyn Woods site.

PRESS RELEASE

Continuing his ongoing installation series INTERVENTION, projected, UK based photographic artist Tim Simmons showcases his ethereal large- scale landscapes with three further events this summer.

Tim’s work examines the multi-layered relationship we have with our natural environment. He captures a world that is raw and primordial, and recreates it as something intensely intimate. From Devon rock pools to volcanic Icelandic landscapes, the earth at its most elemental seems to take on a life of its own; the inanimate becomes animate, almost pulsing with a sense of hushed expectation. It is this surreal, otherworldly quality that defines Tim’s work. His imagery elicits an immediate, visceral response, the illusive atmosphere inspiring quiet reflection, and prompting questions about mortality and he fragility of our planet.

Presented after dark on a freestanding 20’x15’ screen, INTERVENTION, projected will be showing at the following venues in July:

Incandescent Earth / NOWNESS showcases Tim's Iceland series

New site NOWNESS features Tim's work....

Incandescent Earth

Photographer Tim Simmons, who spent six weeks in the land of fire and ice last year, describes the terrain as “one of the few places you still get steaming cracks and colored landscapes.” This turbulence is a result of its continent-straddling location: The island is cut through by the mid-Atlantic ridge, where the Earth’s Eurasian and North American plates diverge and throw up lava, steam, and bubbling, sulfurous water. For the past eight years, Simmons has been traveling the world with his large-format camera and creating oddly pristine images of vistas urban and natural, using his experience as a still-life photographer to artificially light intriguing locations from Norfolk to Arizona. Shooting his Iceland series, he drove from the island’s northern ferry port to the south and back again, transporting his equipment in his specially customized van and spending a day or more in each location, returning with just 16 images, a selection of which we showcase today. The results are both familiar and fantastic; Simmons describes them as “places that sometimes don’t look real at first glance but absolutely exist—you can walk up and find them.” Though he is wary of jumping on “the green wagon,” his work explores our relationship to the planet, at a time when the planet in its untouched state is harder and harder to see. “By treating the subject matter in this way, it lends itself to going on that journey, where by looking you can start to think.” Recently Simmons has started projecting his photographs, mounting open air slideshows at 2009's Latitude festival and the 2010 London Art Fair. More details of his outdoor activities can be found at his blog, Intervention Projects.

We will be posting some pictures of the installation over the next few days.

To mark the opening of Tim's installation on Tuesday 12th at the London Art Fair Wallpaper online feature INTERVENTION, projected.
'Known for his ethereal photographic landscapes, Simmons utilizes abundant artificial light and a large-format camera to achieve his otherworldly aesthetic.

Projecting his work onto the freestanding screen in a series of divergent locations – think shots of an Icelandic river against the backdrop of a concrete cityscape - Simmons' INTERVENTION Projected tour will serve an altruistic slice of extra-gallery artistry in some unexpected places'
